Environmental changes are a crucial part of caring for a cat with reduced mobility. With simple adjustments, you can make their day-to-day life easier, safer, and far more comfortable.
1. Cat Flaps
Make it easy for your cat to move in and out:
- Choose flaps that open with minimal resistance
- Ensure the opening is large enough
- Add steps or ramps if the flap is raised
- If appropriate, leave the flap propped open during usual access hours
- Use plants or barriers outside to help them feel safe from neighbourhood cats
2. Litter Trays
Cats with joint pain may struggle to reach or climb into their usual toileting spots.
Provide litter trays that:
- Have one low side for easy entry
- Are 1.5× your cat’s length
- Are available on every floor of the home
- Use soft, fine-grain litter that’s gentle on sore paws
- Avoid liners that nails may catch on
Aim for one tray per cat + one spare – especially important in multi-cat homes.
3. Food & Water Stations
To reduce discomfort:
- Keep bowls on ground-floor level wherever possible
- Raise bowls slightly to avoid painful crouching
- Provide multiple feeding stations in multi-cat homes
- Offer puzzle feeders to encourage gentle activity
- Try different bowl heights — stands or boxes work well
4. Safe Places & Soft Beds
Cats need secure places to hide, rest and observe the world.
Make these spaces accessible:
- Use ramps or steps to favourite perches (beds, sofas, window ledges)
- Add rugs, runners or non-slip mats on slippery floors
- Choose warm, soft beds in quiet spots
- Igloo-style beds can provide warmth and security for older cats
- Place beds near heat sources, but avoid direct contact
5. Scratching Options
Vertical scratching posts may be uncomfortable. Offer:
- Horizontal scratch mats
- Posts placed near beds and territory boundaries
6. Grooming Support
Cats with mobility issues often cannot groom themselves properly:
- Brush regularly
- Try softer bristle or rubber brushes
- Trim claws if overgrown
- Never pull at mats – ask a vet if clipping is needed
- Use warm damp cotton wool to clean eyes or bottoms if required
Regular grooming not only keeps them comfortable but can also strengthen your bond.
Simple changes can make a big difference in your cat’s wellbeing. Speak to a vet if you need any advice, or use our in-app mobility tools to help monitor pain and mobility over time.
